Since March, as a result of COVID-19, universities in the Asia Pacific region have been working to transition their face-to-face teaching to online learning. On behalf of AP-FECM and the UBC Faculty of Forestry, we are pleased to host an open virtual conference series on online teaching and learning to support this transition. The series will be run from this September to October. Content experts in online teaching and learning will share their experiences with faculty members and students throughout the Asia Pacific region.

Lecture I

Chris Crowley is the  Manager, Learning Design with the UBC Center for Teaching and Learning Technology (CTLT). He has been involved with distance education at UBC for many years as a media specialist and learning designer. He has helped produce award-winning collaborative multimedia projects that involve the creation of online learning courses and resources for universities and colleges across BC.

Hailan Chen, PhD, is a skilled Instructional Designer, Educational Technologist, and e-Learning Specialist, with several years of experience working at UBC CTLT. She manages the development and delivery of quality e-learning courses and projects and is interested in working closely with faculty members to apply sound instructional design principles to their e-learning courses. She ensures that course design and development meet best practice standards, accommodate for diverse learning styles, and incorporate appropriate educational technologies in facilitating and assessing active student learning.

Title: High-tech Application in the Online Course Development

Dr. Nicholas Coops is a Professor in the Faculty of Forestry at UBC and holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in remote sensing. Prof. Coops is the head of the Integrated Remote Sensing Studio (IRSS) within the Faculty of Forestry at UBC, a research lab at UBC investigating and demonstrating applications of remote sensing data to environmental and forest production issues with over 20 PhD, MSc and Postdocs. He has published over 450 peer-reviewed journal papers on the use of remote sensing in forest conservation and production applications. Prof. Coops has been awarded a Killam research scholarship in 2012, the Carl Pulfrich Award sponsored by Leica 2013, the silver medal by the Canadian Remote Sensing Society (CRSS) Award, and he is also the recipient of the world’s most prestigious forestry honour, the Marcus Wallenberg Prize 2020.

Dr. Tony Bates is a Senior Advisor at the Chang School of Continuing Education, Ryerson University, Toronto and is also a Research Associate at Contact North, Ontario. He is currently Chair of the Board of the Canadian Digital Learning Research Association. He was a founding staff member of the British Open University, becoming a full professor in educational media research.  In 1989, he became Executive Director, Strategic Planning and Information Technology at the Open Learning Agency, Vancouver. From 1995 to 2003 he was Director of Distance Education and Technology at UBC. He has worked as a consultant in the design and management of online and distance learning in over 40 countries. He is the author of twelve books, including his latest online, open textbook for faculty and instructors, ‘Teaching in a Digital Age’, which has been downloaded over 500,000 times and translated into ten languages.

Dr. Curt Bonk is Professor of Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University where he teaches psychology and technology courses. From 2012 to 2018, Bonk has been annually named by Education Next and listed in Education Week among the top contributors to the public debate about education from more than 20,000 university-based academics. In 2020, Curt was awarded the IU President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Technology. He has given more 1,700 talks and published a dozen books, including his ground breaking 2020 volume with Routledge, MOOCs and Open Education in the Global South as well as The World Is Open, Empowering Online Learning, The Handbook of Blended Learning, Electronic Collaborators, Adding Some TEC-VARIETY (free as an eBook http://tec-variety.com/). His research focuses on emerging learning technologies, online and blended learning, MOOCs and open education, and the global impacts from collaborative technology. Prof. Jiyou Jia is a full professor and the Head of the Department of Educational Technology,Faculty of Education, Peking University and is also the founding director of International Research Center for Education and Information at Peking University. From August 2017 to December 2018, Prof. Jia served as Distinguished Professor at Institute for Research in Open and Innovative Education, the Open University of Hong Kong. He was invited to work as a guest professor in 2015 by School of Education, Technical University of Munich, Germany. His research interests include educational technology and artificial intelligence in education. His research has won a number of national and international prizes including the First Class Award of the Fifth National Award for Outstanding Achievements in Educational Research, from Ministry of Education, China, 2016, and IAAI (Innovative Application of Artificial Intelligence) Deployed Application Award by AAAI (Association of Advancement of Artificial Intelligence), USA, 2008.

Dr. LIU Yong, professor of silviculture, Beijing Forestry University, director of the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, former director of the Library of Beijing Forestry University, executive Dean of the School of Resources and Environment. He has been engaged in silvicultural teaching and scientific research for more than 30 years, and presided over more than 30 scientific research projects such as National Key Research and Development programs and National Natural Science Foundation projects. He has won 8 science and technology awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level, published more than 10 books and more than 200 papers, obtained 6 national patents, and formulated 4 national, provincial and local standards. He supervised more than 100 doctors and masters. He founded the theory of “Creativity of the Complex System ” and attracted tens of thousands audiences.

Dr. Joordens is a professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto Scarborough, Director of the Advanced Learning Technologies Lab and Co-President & CEO of Cogneeto Inc., a start-up company specializing in creating pedagogically powerful online assessment tools. He teaches the very large (approximately 1,900 students) Introduction to Psychology class on campus and has extensive online experience. As Director of the Advanced Learning Technologies Lab, Dr. Joordens leads the development and assessment of educational technologies to maximize efficacy and usability. The lab developed 3 educational technologies: peerScholar, mTuner and Digital Labcoat. The work performed by the lab was recognized by institutional, provincial and national level awards, with the resulting technologies in use globally.
